Biography: John Miles is a Fellow of Emmanuel College, Cambridge and is the Arup/Royal Academy of Engineering Professor of Transitional Energy Strategies at the University’s Department of Engineering.

Professor Miles’ research interests span a wide range of applications within the spectrum of energy strategy. He is particularly interested in the challenges of low carbon transport and low carbon power generation/distribution. He is currently engaged in research in the areas of electric vehicles, low-cost solar power systems for developing countries, and grid-scale energy storage systems.

Previous to taking up his position at Cambridge John was a Group Board Director at Arup, the global consultancy, for 17 years. During that time, he was responsible for a number of high profile projects and developments. He has very wide experience in the fields of energy and resources, and has particular expertise in the areas of energy strategy and low-carbon transport systems. As a senior member of the firm, Prof. Miles was a media spokesman on subjects ranging from Peak Oil to Intelligent Mobility, and he actively contributed to the debate on carbon reduction and global warming.
